The Diamondbacks have acquired outfielder Jon Jay from The Royals for minor league pitchers Gabe Speier (LHP) and Elvis Luciano (RHP). The move for The Diamondbacks helps add a solid outfielder to an outfield that his been injured, with A.J. Pollock and Steve Souza Jr. are still on the DL, and Chris Owings and Jarrod Dyson struggling with the bat (.193/.251/.295 batting line with 3 homers and 13 RBI’s for Owings. .204/.301/.299 batting line with 2 homers, 8 RBI’s, and 9 Sbs for Dyson).
On the season, Jon Jay is batting .307/.363/.374 with The Royals. He also has a .360 BABIP, and currently holds, what would tie a career high, 14.7 strikeout %. Jay also has good experience in all 3 outfield positions. He’s been decent with the glove too, with 2 DRS, .1 defensive WAR, and 5.7 UZR across all 3 positions.
As for the 2 pitchers The Royals got in return, Gabe Speier has been a part of 3 major deals. One being the Cespedes and Porcello swap between The Red Sox and Tigers, the next being sent with Ian Krol to The Braves for Cameron Maybin, and the last being the Shelby Miller/Dansby Swanson and Ender Inciarte swap. The 23 year old lefty has pitched to a 3.03 ERA, with solid 3.0 BB/9, 7.9 K/9, and 1.281 WHIP rates in 29.2 innings at Arizona’s double-A affiliate. The other pitcher The Royals got was young 17 year old right hander Elvis Luciano. In his 66.2 innings of work, the righty has a 2.84 ERA, while keeping walks to a minimum (2.4 BB/9), and keeping the ball in the yard with a .3 HR/9 rate. He’s also got a 7 K/9 rate.
