The Reds took down the San Diego Padres in the first game of a three game series on Friday night, as the Reds look to finish off their west coast road trip with a series victory.
The Reds started off with an RBI groundout from catcher Tucker Barnhart in the third inning, followed by a fourth inning with shortstop Jose Peraza hitting a two RBI double and Barnhart coming back again with an RBI single to make it a 4-0 game. In the fifth, Reds second baseman Scooter Gennett smacked a solo home run and Peraza added a two RBI single, which was challenged by the Padres but upheld. While the Padres were able to add a two RBI triple by shortstop Freddy Galvis, it wouldn’t be enough as the Reds won it 7-2.
Reds starting pitcher Tyler Mahle pitched five innings of shutout baseball, allowing five hits and two walks in the process but still getting the win. Padres starter Walker Lockett was hit with the loss, going just three and two-thirds innings, giving up four earned runs, four hits and five walks.
The teams will play once again on Saturday night.
