Since the MLB draft just happened, I figured there wouldn’t be a better time to write this article. The draft has been upsetting me for a long time.
And the truth is, I have no idea why. But I feel that there’s a few things that could make the draft a lot better.
I just wanted to start off by saying, that the MLB draft will probably never be at the level the NBA and the NHL draft are at, and there are a few reasons for this.
1st, the obsession with college basketball and football. Anytime March comes around, the general sports fan is usually very aware of march madness, and most people create a bracket and follow the tournament very closely. And college football is very popular all season long. All while college baseball is just kinda there. More people talk about preseason football rankings in April than college baseball.
2nd, the impact players have on their teams the following year. This may not go for the NFL as much, but it definitely goes with the NBA. When players are rookies in the NBA, they usually start sometimes if not most of the time the following year. Look at guys like Donovan Mitchell and Jayson Tatum, they have become stars for their team in only their rookie season. But sadly, the same can’t be said for the MLB. Players can spend anywhere from 3-6 years before they see any playing time in the bigs. And by then, who even remembers when they were drafted.
But even with those factors, Major League Baseball could at least do a few things to make the draft at least feel a little more important.
Last year the Twins had the first overall pick and they selected Royce Lewis, the thing is, where was he? Having the first pick not show up to the draft, kind of sucks.
Now hold on, I understand Baker Mayfield, who was the first pick in the NFL draft wasn’t there either. And if some players want to be with their whole family when they get drafted, they have every right to do that. But MLB, can we like fly out players who want to be there, because it seems like there aren’t that many players there when they get called in the first round.
And one more thing, why is the MLB draft in Studio 42? For those of you who don’t know, studio 42 is one of the studios that is commonly used for MLB tonight. But these big venues that the NBA and NFL draft are in usually get filled, and MLB has, Studio 42.
It may just be myself, but I feel like other people would by tickets to the MLB draft right? Well there's only one way to tell. MLB, make it happen.
