The Reds lost in the first game of their three game series against the Cleveland Indians 10-3 on Monday night.
The Reds got on the board first as catcher Tucker Barnhart hit a solo home run in the second inning, but the Indians would respond not long after with a two run homer from third baseman Jose Ramirez in the third inning. The fifth saw the Reds briefly tie the game back up as second baseman Scooter Gennett hit a solo shot, but again the Indians came back as they had a big sixth inning, starting with RBI doubles by pinch hitter Yandy Diaz and left fielder Michael Brantley. The inning continued as right fielder Melky Cabrera hit a two RBI single and second baseman Jason Kipnis hit a two RBI double, followed by an RBI double by catcher Yan Gomes to give the Indians a 9-2 advantage. They tacked on another run in the seventh as Ramirez hit an RBI single and while the Reds got a run back in the eighth as first baseman Curt Casali hit a solo homer, but it wouldn’t be enough as the Indians claimed the 10-3 victory.
Indians starting pitcher Mike Clevinger went five innings, allowing two earned runs on five hits and six walks in the win. Reds starter Homer Bailey went five and a third innings, allowing five earned runs on 10 hits and two walks in the loss.
The teams will face off once again on Tuesday night.
