The Reds lost the second game of their series 4-2 in 11 innings on Tuesday night, evening up th series after the Reds came back late to win on Monday night.
The game started out with Cardinals first baseman Jose Martinez hitting an RBI single in the fourth inning to give the team the early lead, followed by second baseman Yairo Munoz doubling that lead in the seventh inning with an RBI double. In the bottom of the inning, Reds third baseman Eugenio Suarez, who tied the game up on Monday night leading to the Reds’ eventual win, again came up big with a two run home run to tie it up 2-2. This time, however, the Reds would not complete the comeback as the game eventually went into extra innings and Cardinals right fielder Dexter Fowler hit a two run homer of his own in the 11th. The Reds would go scoreless in the bottom of the inning as the Cardinals took the 4-2 victory.
Cardinals starting pitcher Austin Gomber went six and a third innings, allowing two earned runs on a pair of hits and a pair of walks to take the no decision. Reds starter Homer Bailey, making his first start for the Reds since May 28, went six and two-thirds innings, giving up two earned runs on five hits and a pair of walks in the no decision. Cardinals reliever Sam Tuivailala earned the win, while Reds reliever Amir Garrett took the loss. Cardinals closer Bud Norris earned the save.
The teams will play in the rubber match of the series on Wednesday afternoon.
