The Reds took the second loss in their series against the Pittsburgh Pirates 6-2 on Saturday afternoon, as the team will face another series loss against a National League Central opponent.
The game started out with Pirates center fielder Starling Marte hitting an RBI groundout in the first inning to give the Pirates an early 1-0 lead. In the second, however, the Reds responded as third baseman Eugenio Suarez hit a solo home run to tie the game up. The momentum wouldn’t last long for the Reds, however, as Pirates third baseman Colin Moran hit a solo homer of his own in the third and Pirates catcher Elias Diaz got a solo shot in the fourth. They added on in the sixth with an RBI single by pinch hitter David Freese and second baseman Josh Harrison hit a two run home run. While the Reds would get a run back in the ninth as right fielder Brandon Dixon swatted a solo homer, but it wouldn’t be enough as the Pirates won 6-2.
Pirates starting pitcher Ivan Nova earned the win, giving up one earned run on five hits and three walks in six innings pitched. Reds starter Luis Castillo took the loss as he went five innings, allowing three earned runs on six hits and a pair of walks.
The teams will finish up the series on Sunday afternoon.
