The Reds started out their new series against the San Francisco Giants with an extra innings win on Friday night, taking it 2-1 in 11 innings.
Despite a run from both teams early on in the ball game, with Reds catcher Curt Casali hitting an RBI single in the second inning and Giants right fielder Andrew McCutchen also hitting an RBI single in the third, but that would be all the runs for each team in regulation, sending the game into extras.
Both teams continued to struggle to get their offense going in the 10th and 11th innings, however with one swing of the bat left fielder Phillip Ervin sealed the win for the Reds as he led off the bottom of the 11th with a walk-off solo home run to take the 2-1 victory.
Reds starting pitcher Anthony DeSclafani went seven and two thirds innings to take the no decision, allowing just one earned run on six hits and one walk, while Giants starter Casey Kelly also took the no decision, going four and a third and giving up one earned run on nine hits and a walk. Reds reliever David Hernandez grabbed the win, while Giants reliever Ray Black was saddled with the loss.
The teams will play again on Saturday night.
