The Reds lost the first game of their series on Thursday night against the Chicago Cubs 7-1, kicking off a four-game road series.
The Reds got on the board first, as right fielder Phillip Ervin hit an RBI single in the first inning, but that would be all the scoring that the Reds would get as the Cubs took the lead in the bottom of the inning courtesy of a two run home run from first baseman Anthony Rizzo. The Cubs then added to their lead in the third as shortstop Javier Baez hit a solo homer, then again in the fifth with an RBI sacrifice fly by Rizzo. The seventh saw right fielder Ben Zobrist and catcher Victor Caratini each add RBI singles for the Cubs, as they went on to take the first game of the series 7-1.
Cubs starting pitcher Cole Hamels took the win, going all nine innings to pitch a complete game, allowing just one earned run on eight hits and a pair of walks, while Reds starter Anthony DeSclafani went six innings, allowing four earned runs on eight hits and a walk in the loss.
The teams will play in the second game of the series on Friday afternoon.
