The Reds defeated the Milwaukee Brewers in the second game of their series on Tuesday night, after the Brewers won the opening game of the series on Monday night.
The Brewers got off to a strong start in the first inning, as first baseman Jesus Aguilar hit an RBI double, catcher Erik Kratz hit an RBI single and shortstop Orlando Arcia hit a two RBI single to make it a 4-0 game early. However, the Reds would begin a comeback in the third as starting pitcher Sal Romano, left fielder Phillip Ervin and second baseman Scooter Gennett each had an RBI single to bring the game to within one, but in the bottom of the inning the Brewers were able to add a run on a solo home run from second baseman Travis Shaw. The fourth saw the Reds take the lead as first baseman Brandon Dixon hit an RBI fielder’s choice, left fielder Phillip Ervin tied the game on an RBI single and second baseman Scooter Gennett grabbed the lead on an RBI single. The Reds also tacked on an insurance run on a passed ball allowing center fielder Billy Hamilton to cross home.
In the eighth, the Brewers would come back again as pinch hitter Jonathan Schoop got a solo homer and left fielder Ryan Braun tied the game on an RBI double. However, in the ninth, the Reds would retake the lead once again and for the final time with Gennett hitting a solo homer and right fielder Mason Williams getting an RBI triple to give the Reds the 9-7 win.
Reds starting pitcher Sal Romano went five innings, allowing five earned runs on seven hits and a pair of walks in the no decision. Brewers starter Junior Guerra also had a no decision, going five and a third innings allowing two earned runs on 10 hits and one walk. Reds reliever Raisel Iglesias earned the win, but was also hit with a blown save in the process. Brewers reliever Dan Jennings took the loss.
The teams will play in the rubber match of the series on Wednesday afternoon.
