The Reds were swept by the Pittsburgh Pirates on Sunday afternoon with a 9-2 loss, after the Reds fell in the other games in the series on Friday and Saturday night.
The Pirates jumped out to the early lead after right fielder Gregory Polanco hit a two run home run in the first inning, followed by a big second inning where shortstop Max Moroff got an RBI single, left fielder Corey Dickerson added a two run shot as he homered in all three games in the series and center fielder Starling Marte added a solo homer to allow the Pirates to go up 6-0. In the fourth, second baseman Sean Rodriguez continued to add on to the advantage with a solo homer and Polanco came back with an RBI single. Catcher Elias Diaz tacked on an RBI double in the sixth and while the Reds would get a two RBI single from center fielder Phillip Ervin, it wouldn’t be enough as the Pirates clinched the sweep with the 9-2 win.
Pirates starting pitcher Ivan Nova went six and two-thirds innings, allowing two earned runs on five hits and a pair of walks on the way to the win. Meanwhile, Reds starter Mat Harvey went three and two-thirds in the loss, giving up eight earned runs on eight hits with no walks in the process.
The Reds will next play on Monday night at home against the St. Louis Cardinals.
