The Reds lost the second game of their series on Saturday night against the San Diego Padres 8-2 after winning on Friday.
The game began with the Padres scoring a run on a first inning RBI sacrifice fly by second baseman Jose Pirela, which the Reds responded to in the second inning with a solo home run by new catcher Curt Casali, who was picked up in a trade with the Tampa Bay Rays earlier in the week, but the Reds would not fare as well in the bottom of the inning as center fielder Manuel Margot hit a two RBI double to put the Padres back on top, starting pitcher Eric Lauer hit an RBI sacrifice fly and left fielder Travis Jankowski got an RBI single for a 5-1 Padres advantage. The Padres then added to the lead in the seventh, getting an RBI single from first baseman Eric Hosmer and a two RBI single by left fielder Matt Szczur, who came into the game as a defensive replacement and while the Reds were able to get a run back in the ninth on a solo home run by right fielder Scott Schebler, it wouldn’t be enough as the Padres won it 8-2.
Lauer went five innings for the Padres, allowing just one earned run on five hits and two walks to get the win, while Reds starting pitcher Matt Harvey also went five innings but gave up four earned runs on six hits and one walk as he was hit with the loss.
The teams will go for the series victory on Sunday afternoon.
