The Reds fell to the Washington Nationals 10-4 on Thursday night in the first game of a four game series.
The game started out with a big second inning for the Nationals as catcher Matt Wieters started off the scoring with an RBI sacrifice fly, followed by an RBI single by starting pitcher Max Scherzer. That was then followed up by a two RBI single from shortstop Trea Turner as well as bases loaded walks courtesy of center fielder Bryce Harper and left fielder Juan Soto to give the Nationals a 6-0 lead and knock Reds starter Tyler Mahle out of the game early. In the third, right fielder Adam Eaton added on another run for the Nationals as he had an RBI single, but the fourth saw the Reds get on the board as third baseman Eugenio Suarez hit a two run home run, but in the eighth the Nationals came back as Turner hit a two run homer of his own and Harper hit a solo shot. The Reds responded in the ninth as shortstop Jose Peraza hit a two RBI double, but it wouldn’t be enough as the Nationals held on to take the 10-4 victory.
Scherzer earned the win with two earned runs allowed on four hits and a pair of walks over six innings, while Mahle took the loss, going one and two thirds innings allowing six earned runs on four hits and three walks. Reds reliever Keury Mella rescued the Reds bullpen, however, as he went four and a third innings of relief.
The teams will face off again on Friday night.
