The Reds defeated the Milwaukee Brewers 9-7 on Tuesday night to take the first game of the three game series.
The Reds started off the first inning with a bang, as shortstop Jose Peraza hit a two run home run, followed by an RBI single from catcher Tucker Barnhart as well as a run coming across on a wild pitch with third baseman Eugenio Suarez scoring to make it a 4-0 game. In the second, the Reds continued to add onto their lead as right fielder Scott Schebler drew a bases loaded walk and left fielder Phillip Ervin hit into an RBI fielder’s choice to give the Reds a 6-0 lead.
However, the Brewers began a comeback starting with the fourth inning as catcher Erik Kratz got them on the board with an RBI single, followed by a sixth inning that saw them add another run as left fielder Christian Yelich hit a solo homer. However, in the bottom of the inning, the Reds restored their five run advantage on an RBI single by Ervin. In the seventh, the Brewers cut the Reds lead down to just one as right fielder Hernan Perez added an RBI double and Yelich hit another home run, this one scoring three runs. However, the Reds wasted no time trying to restore their lead as second baseman Scooter Gennett scored an RBI triple and while the Brewers added another run on an RBI groundout from Yelich in the ninth, it wouldn’t be enough as the Reds claimed the 9-7 win.
Reds starting pitcher Anthony DeSclafani went six and two thirds innings, giving up four earned runs on seven hits and a walk to get the win. Brewers starter Junior Guerra struggled, going just one and a third innings while giving up six earned runs on eight hits and a pair of walks in the loss. Reds closer Raisel Iglesias earned the save.
The teams will face off again on Wednesday night.
