The Reds lost to the Detroit Tigers 7-4 on Wednesday afternoon as the Tigers swept the series. The Reds also played in the final road interleague game of the season.
The Tigers got on the board first as shortstop Jose Iglesias hit a two RBI double in the second inning, followed by a fourth inning solo home run by first baseman Jim Adduci to make it a 3-0 game. They then extended their lead further in the sixth inning as first baseman Ronny Rodriguez, who came into the game as a pinch hitter, knocked in an RBI double, followed by an RBI single by Iglesias and an RBI single from center fielder JaCoby Jones to make it a 6-0 lead. However, in the seventh, the Reds began to make a comeback as designated hitter Preston Tucker, who came over to the Reds after being picked up at the trade deadline from the Braves for Adam Duvall, started the scoring with an RBI single, followed by a two RBI double by catcher Curt Casali and an RBI single by center fielder Billy Hamilton to cut the lead down to 6-4. However, the Tigers would add on another run in the eighth as Jones hit another RBI single as the Reds didn’t score again, allowing the Tigers to take it 7-4 and sweep the two-game set.
Tigers starting pitcher Mike Fiers only went two innings, allowing two hits with no walks and no earned runs in a no decision, however reliever Drew VerHager entered the game and pitched three innings with three hits and no walks and no earned runs to take the win. Reds starter Sal Romano went five and a third innings in the loss, allowing four earned runs on eight hits and no walks. Tigers closer Shane Greene earned the save.
The Reds will next play on Thursday night to kick off a four game series on the road against the Washington Nationals.
