The Reds took down the Cleveland Indians in the first game of their three game series on Monday night 7-5, as the teams will look to take the first round of the Ohio Cup.
The game started out with Reds catcher Tucker Barnhart hitting an RBI double in the second inning, followed by a fourth inning that saw designated hitter Jesse Winker hit an RBI double of his own and Barnhart coming back with an RBI single to give the Reds a 3-0 lead. The Indians got a run back in the bottom of the inning as first baseman and former Red Yonder Alonso hit a solo home run, but the Reds responded in the fifth as first baseman Joey Votto hit a solo homer of his own. The seventh saw right fielder Scott Schebler add another run for the Reds with an RBI single, followed by a ninth inning where Schebler hit a two run homer. While the Indians would get a rally going in the bottom of the inning with second baseman Jason Kipnis hitting a two run shot, shortstop Francisco Lindor hitting an RBI sacrifice fly and left fielder Michael Brantley getting an RBI double, they would run out of time as the Reds took the 7-5 win.
Reds starting pitcher Anthony DeSclafani went seven innings, allowing just one earned run on five hits and two walks to earn the win, while Indians starter Mike Clevinger took the loss as he went six innings, giving up five earned runs on seven hits and three walks. Reds reliever Raisel Iglesias took the save.
The teams will play again on Tuesday night.
