The Reds lost in the last game of their series against the Cleveland Indians 19-4 on Wednesday night, after the Reds had already taken the series victory.
The Indians started the game with a bang, as third baseman Jose Ramirez hit a two run home run in the first inning. The offense wouldn’t stop as the Indians scored nine runs in the third, with first baseman Yonder Alonso getting an RBI single, catcher Yan Gomes hitting a two RBI single, right fielder Tyler Naquin hitting an RBI single, left fielder Michael Brantley getting a two RBI single and Ramirez coming back again with a three run homer. The Indians offense kept going in the fourth as second baseman Jason Kipnis hit a two run homer, Naquin hit an RBI double and shortstop Francisco Lindor added a three run shot to give the Indians a 17-0 lead. The Reds began to chip away with an RBI sacrifice fly by shortstop Jose Peraza in the fifth and a solo homer from second baseman Scooter Gennett in the sixth. However, the Indians would counter in the seventh with Alonso and Naquin each hitting an RBI single. Reds left fielder Jesse Winker added a two run shot in the eighth, but that would be it as the Indians took the 19-4 win.
Indians starting pitcher Carlos Carrasco went five innings in the win, allowing one earned run on five hits and one walk. Reds starter Tyler Mahle went two and a third innings, allowing five earned runs on six hits and two walks in the loss. However, Reds reliever Jackson Stephens kept the damage to a minimum, pitching three innings of relief. Indians reliever Adam Plutko picked up his first career save as he went four innings of relief.
The Reds will next play on Friday night on the road against the St. Louis Cardinals.
