The Reds fell to the Chicago Cubs 8-7 on Saturday afternoon, after taking the first game of the series on Friday afternoon.
The game started with the Reds scoring on a pair of wild pitches allowing catcher Tucker Barnhart and second baseman Scooter Gennett to cross home in the first inning, followed by a three run homer by third baseman Eugenio Suarez in the third inning to give the Reds a 5-0 lead. However, the Cubs would get a couple of runs back in the fourth as catcher Victor Caratini hit an RBI double and shortstop Addison Russell hit an RBI groundout. In the fifth, Reds left fielder Jesse Winker hit an RBI single, followed by another RBI single by first baseman Joey Votto in the sixth to restore the five run lead, but the Cubs came back as relief pitcher Randy Rosario hit an RBI single in the bottom of the inning, then second baseman Javier Baez hit a solo home run in the seventh, followed by a big eighth inning where right fielder Ben Zobrist hit a two RBI double, then Baez came back again with an RBI single to tie the game. First baseman Anthony Rizzo came through with the eventual game-winning RBI groundout as the Reds were unable to score in the ninth, allowing the Cubs to take the 8-7 victory.
Cubs starting pitcher Tyler Chatwood went five and two-thirds innings in the no decision, allowing seven earned runs on nine hits and four walks, while Reds starter Matt Harvey also pitched five and two-thirds, giving up two earned runs over nine hits and a walk in his no decision. Reds reliever Jared Hughes took the loss as well as the blown save. Cubs reliever Brandon Morrow earned the save.
The teams will play in the series finale on Sunday afternoon.
