The Reds completed a four-game sweep against the Chicago Cubs by winning on Sunday afternoon 8-6, as the team will look to finish the second half of the season strong.
Both teams went scoreless until the fifth inning, when the Cubs capitalized on a number of opportunities with right fielder Jason Heyward hitting a two RBI double, followed by an RBI single courtesy of second baseman Javier Baez, plus a two run homer by first baseman Anthony Rizzo as the Cubs took a 5-0 lead. In the bottom of the inning, however, the Reds got a run back as pinch hitter Michael Lorenzen, normally a relief pitcher, came through with a solo home run, but the Cubs responded in the seventh with center fielder Albert Almora Jr. hitting a solo homer of his own.
The bottom of the seventh would be big for the Reds, as shortstop Jose Peraza hit an RBI single, but pinch hitter Jesse Winker made it a one-run game as he hit a three run shot. The team tied it up with an RBI single by catcher Tucker Barnhart, followed by first baseman Joey Votto getting an RBI double to take the lead. The team then added on an insurance run with a bases loaded walk by Peraza as the Reds went on to win it 8-6.
Reds starting pitcher Sal Romana earned a no decision with five innings pitched, allowing five earned runs on eight hits and one walk, while Cubs starter Mike Montgomery also had a no decision with six innings pitched, allowing four earned runs with six hits and a pair of walks. Reds reliever Jackson Stephens earned the win, while Cubs reliever Pedro Strop took the loss as well as a blown save. Reds reliever Raisel Iglesias earned the save.
The Reds will next play on Monday night on the road against the Atlanta Braves.
