The Reds won the first game of their series against the St. Louis Cardinals on Friday night 9-1, as the team will go for their second straight series victory on the road trip.
The game started out with Reds right fielder Jesse Winker hitting a two RBI double in the first inning, however the Cardinals would respond in the bottom of the inning as catcher Yadier Molina cut the lead in half on an RBI single. In the third, Reds second baseman Scooter Gennett hit a solo home run to restore the two run advantage, but the Reds opened up the advantage in the seventh as Winker hit an RBI single, left fielder Adam Duvall drove in an RBI double and pinch hitter Dilson Herrera added a three run homer to get an 8-1 lead. The Reds tacked on another run in the eighth as right fielder Scott Schebler, who came in as a defensive replacement, got an RBI single to help the Reds go on to take the 9-1 win.
Reds starting pitcher Matt Harvey went five innings, giving up just one earned run on four hits and a pair of walks in the win. Cardinals starter Carlos Martinez took the loss, as he gave up three earned runs on six hits and two walks.
The teams will play again on Saturday afternoon.
